Creating a concrete side table is a rewarding project that combines craftsmanship with modern design. Follow these detailed steps to ensure a successful build.

Step 1: Construct the Table Mold

The foundation of your concrete table is a robust and precisely shaped mold. Begin by drawing your desired table shape (a teardrop or any other custom design) onto your melamine board. Then, using your glue gun, attach scrap wood pieces (e.g., 2x4s) along the outer edges of this drawn shape. These wooden pieces will act as a sturdy framework. Next, fit the vinyl trim inside the inner perimeter of these wooden supports. The vinyl trim will define the exact edge of your concrete top, so ensure it’s smoothly contoured and tightly secured.

Step 2: Secure the Mold Components

With the initial framework in place, it’s critical to ensure the mold won’t shift during the concrete pouring and curing process. Grab some scrap wood pieces (e.g., more 2x4s) and fashion a small bridge structure. This bridge will temporarily sit across your mold and allow you to suspend the plywood and mesh base at the correct height within the concrete, ensuring it’s centered and fully encased.

Step 9: Mix Your Concrete

Mixing concrete is a critical step. Always follow the specific instructions provided on your concrete countertop mix packaging. These mixes often have precise water-to-mix ratios for optimal strength and workability.

Tip: Begin by adding water slowly and sparingly to the dry mix. You’re aiming for a thick, peanut butter-like consistency – not too wet, which weakens the concrete, and not too dry, which makes it difficult to work with. Over-wetting can lead to a weaker, more porous concrete. Mix thoroughly until there are no dry pockets.

Step 10: Place Concrete into the Mold

Once your concrete is mixed to the perfect consistency, it’s time to fill the mold. Using a small shovel or trowel, carefully transfer the concrete mix into your prepared mold. Work in manageable batches. Don your protective gloves and use your hands to push the concrete firmly into all edges, corners, and intricate parts of the mold. This helps eliminate air pockets and ensures a crisp, detailed final product. Fill the mold about halfway at this stage.

Step 11: Position the Plywood and Mesh Base

With the initial layer of concrete in place, carefully lower your plywood and mesh base onto the wet concrete. Center it within the mold. Now, utilize the support bridge you created in Step 8. Place the bridge across the top of your mold, and then use your drill to secure the screws of the bridge to the plywood base. This will hold the plywood and mesh suspended at the desired height, preventing it from sinking to the bottom of the mold. Fill the remaining space in the mold with concrete, ensuring the plywood and mesh are completely covered.

Tip: To eliminate trapped air bubbles – which can lead to unsightly “bug holes” on the surface – gently shake and vibrate the mold. You can tap the sides with a rubber mallet or use an orbital sander (without sandpaper) on the outside of the mold for a few minutes. This vibration helps the concrete settle and releases trapped air.

Step 12: Scrape Off Excess and Smooth the Concrete

Once the mold is filled and vibrated, use your putty knife or trowel to scrape off any excess concrete from the top surface. Work diligently to create a level and smooth finish. After the concrete has fully cured (which can take several days to achieve full strength, even if demolding after 48 hours), you can proceed with removing the mold. Start by unscrewing and removing the support bridge. Then, carefully pry away the scrap wood blocks that formed the outer frame of your mold. Finally, gently peel away the vinyl trim. Take your time to avoid chipping the edges of your new concrete table. Once the mold is completely removed, inspect your table. You may find some small concrete shavings or rough spots; carefully trim these away with a utility knife or chisel for a cleaner appearance.

Step 14: Smoothen Out Edges for a Refined Finish

For an exceptionally professional and rounded finish, do not skip this step. Attach a flat disk to your angle grinder. Carefully go over the surface and all edges of your concrete table. This process, known as grinding, will not only smoothen any imperfections but also give the table a more refined, softened, and tactile edge, making it safer and more aesthetically pleasing. Wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection and a dust mask, during this process.

Step 15: Attach Your Chosen Table Legs

The final step brings your concrete slab to life as a functional table. Position your chosen table legs (such as stylish hairpin legs) on the underside of the concrete tabletop. Use a drill and appropriate screws to securely attach the legs. Ensure they are evenly spaced and firmly fastened for stability.
